Strategies that Work!
Do you get nervous before trainings, long runs and races? There are a couple of things that you can do to help ease your nerves. The first strategy is positive thinking. A really good exercise that works for me and for others is to practice some positive visualization. Visualize yourself out training or on the course on race weekend and having a really great day. When you go out for your mid-week trainings, whether it’s outside or on a treadmill, try to picture yourself on race day, dressed in your race-day clothes. Begin rehearsing your training/race day strategy, and start formulating your own plan for how you will mentally break up the mileage/course into manageable segments, and how you will successfully complete each one of those segments, one by one. Develop a list of “positive thoughts” that you will be able to draw upon and use on the course when the going gets rough. Maybe it’s a relative or friend who has had the strength to fight cancer or other daily challenges. Maybe it’s the support of your family or loved one who will get you through. Maybe it’s a favorite song or inspirational phrase. I can tell you from experience, these thoughts can truly help you in training effectively or on race day.
